Did you know that 40% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions but only 8% actually achieve their goals? That’s right – 8%! When you are running your own chiropractic practice on top of managing your own life, you’ve got a lot on your plate. Perhaps you’re aiming too high with your resolutions and maybe you don’t need to achieve perfect care for your patients, lose 30 pounds, workout seven days a week, and work 12-hour workdays…oh, and maintain your sanity.
Here are our suggestions for achievable New Year’s resolutions to help 2020 be a year of health and happiness – for you and your chiropractic practice!
1. Consume More Whole Foods
Year after year, we set goals to lose x amount of pounds and we just end up disappointed when it doesn’t happen. Instead of setting a specific number goal this year, try a different tactic and make a goal of consuming more whole foods. Avoid packaged food items like frozen meals, potato chips, and other vending machine options and choose fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein, cheese, and yogurt. You’ll feel a lot better and be better able to take on the tasks at hand. And you may even lose a few pounds in the process!
2. Take a Break
You may think you’re doing everyone involved with your practice a favor by powering through your breaks, but the threat of burnout is very real. Before you know it, you’ve barely stopped moving in your 8+ hour workday and you leave exhausted, hungry, and overwhelmed. Make a resolution to take your breaks. Not only will you feel better, but your patients will receive better care. When you create a relaxed space to sit down and eat or take a mental break, your mental and physical health will only improve.
3. Get Organized
This is a pretty popular resolution and one that’s also easy to fail at. Whether this is your goal at home or in your practice, it is worthy of trying again. Fellow disorganized chiropractic professionals – it’s better on the other side! Whether it’s asking your staff for help or organizing your home office, get the new year started fresh and get organized.
4. Try New Exercises
Not everyone likes exercise…even those in the healthcare profession. You may be a couch potato when you’re not at work, but in order to be the best chiropractor you can, you’ve got to take care of yourself. Try new exercises to maintain your health; your body and mental health will appreciate it. Plus, you may even find some new exercises that you can suggest to your patients.
5. Be Kind
Operating your own chiropractic can be tough. You are juggling what seems like a million things on a daily basis: patient care and satisfaction, the many personalities of your coworkers and staff, billing, marketing, and so much more. Add your own personal life into the mix, and it’s easy to see why tensions can run high. In 2020, try to practice mindfulness and make kindness a priority.
